September 5

We started with good intentions today but some minor mechanical trouble forced us to change our route.  Today was one of the cooler days lately and really felt like a late fall day.  We left Parkhill and headed south west through Glencoe and Newbury and headed west to the the St Clair river.  The ride from Newbury to the river is always great as the road is smooth and seldom has traffic.  We went up the river and under the bridge at Point Edward for fries.  Once leaving Point Edward the trouble began.  The bike I was with (99 Sportster 1200) would not start and it appeared to be just a loose cable on the battery.  After tightening the bolts the bike started and we were on our way. Just after Camalachie the bike began to miss fire and the speedo flashing on and off.  We checked again and found the cables were tight and the bike would run fine if you pushed down on top of the battery box.  So we wedged a handle of a screwdriver between the frame and the top of the box and we were able to limp the bike home. Turns out the positive cable was broken off inside the connector where it connects to the solenoid.  Still a decent ride even though we did not finish with ice cream in Grand Bend!
